Ed Marion- Builder/Consultant
Passive House Ontario is owned and operated by Ed Marion, a builder and Passive House specialist based out of Oakville, Ontario. Ed spent most of the 2000s working in custom home construction and renovation. During this time he developed a growing awareness that current building practices were not sustainable. In 2008, he came across an article in Fine Homebuilding magazine that literally changed his life. The article was titled Houses you can Heat with a Hair Dryer and it was his first introduction to the concept of Passive House design. He had worked on many large custom homes, most fitted with two furnaces and two air conditioners so the idea that you could heat a home with a single hair dryer seemed radical to say the least. Passive House, now gaining much attention in North America, was little known at the time outside of Europe where, since 1996, tens of thousands of units have been built using this approach. His interest led him in the fall of 2008 to his first Passive House conference in Duluth, Minnesota hosted by Passive House Institute US (PHIUS). Shortly thereafter, in the spring of 2009, Ed enrolled in the Certified Passive House Consultant training program, a nine day course offered by PHIUS which he completed by the summer of that same year. Since then he has continued to expand his knowledge and skill and has emerged as one of Canada's leading experts in high performance home design and construction.
