Ed Marion- Builder/Consultant
My name is Ed Marion and I'm a general contractor and Passive House specialist who lives in Oakville, Ontario. Why did I get involved in Passive House design? I was busy working in construction when I began to develop a growing awareness that our current building practices were not sustainable. Then, in 2008, I came across an article in Fine Homebuilding magazine that literally changed my life. The article was titled Houses you can Heat with a Hair Dryer and it was my first introduction to the concept of Passive House design. I had worked on many large custom homes, most fitted with two furnaces and two air conditioners so the idea that you could heat a home with a single hair dryer seemed radical to say the least. Passive House, now gaining much attention in North America, was little known at the time outside of Europe where, since 1996 more than 20,000 units have been built using this approach (mostly in Germany, Austria, and parts of Scandanavia). My interest led me in the fall of 2008 to my first Passive House conference in Duluth, Minnesota hosted by Passive House Institute US (PHIUS). Shortly thereafter, in the spring of 2009, I enrolled in the Certified Passive House Consultant training program, a nine day course offered by PHIUS which I completed by the summer of that same year. Equipped with my new-found knowledge, I set about gaining experience.
